Charles Massie

January 25, 1932 — September 29, 2018

Charles R. Massie, 86, of Owensboro, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2018 at his home. He was born in Owensboro to the late Rice and Elizabeth Flaherty Massie. As a child, Charles attended St. Francis Academy. He went on to study at Purdue University.

Mr. Massie began his forty-year career in tobacco sales with Liggett Myers before joining Pinkerton Tobacco where he became a division sales manager. He retired in 1992. Charles was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church and served on the boards of Owensboro Museum of Fine Art and Owensboro Museum of Science.

He developed a strong passion for crafting fine furniture as a young man after being mentored by Harris Farley of Henderson. Over a span of fifty-five years Mr. Massie built ninety pieces of exceptional furniture in the style of the 1700's. Charles was an avid golfer and thoroughly enjoyed college basketball. He found joy watching the birds and maintaining his beautiful lawn, azaleas, dogwoods and landscaping. Charles was known for witty sayings and loved to entertain his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with his colorful storytelling skill.

Mr. Massie was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn Stiles Massie in 2000 and a son, Jonathan W. Massie in 1993.

He is survived by children, Cathy Clements (David) of Owensboro, Rebecca Hubble (Russell) of Hopkinsville, KY and Charles Massie, Jr. (Lori) of Waltonville, IL; grandchildren, Kristen Rhineburger (Jimbo), Katie Kahn (Mark), Lacey Ramirez (Alex), Lindsey Howell (David), Rebecca King, Bobbi, Morgan, Olivia and Wade Massie; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Susan Murray of New York; sister-in-law, Sandy Zautke (Frank) and family of Colorado Springs, CO; brother-in-law, David Stiles (Linda) and family of Paducah, KY; and a special friend, Beverly Steele.

The Funeral Mass will be 11:00 AM, Friday, October 5 at Immaculate Catholic Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM and Friday from 9:30 until 10:30 AM at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery.
