Dr. John Donald "J. Don" Riley, 83, of Owensboro passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky on November 21, 1934 to the late James Charles and Edith Riley. He graduated from Eastern High School in Louisville in 1953, received a BS from the University of Louisville in 1957 and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1961. Dr. Riley moved to Owensboro and began practicing dentistry with his late uncle and mentor, Dr. William T. Riley in 1963. He retired in 2013 after 52 years of practice.
Dr. Riley served in the United States Navy from 1961-1963, as a 2nd Lieutenant onboard the USS Orion stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a very community-minded man and shared his talents with the Head Start Program at Hager Preschool since it's inception in 1968 and provided dental services for the children and loved dressing up at Halloween for them. He served on the boards of the Owensboro Country Club, Campbell Club, Junior Achievement, Kiwanis Club, Owensboro Tennis Club, Western Little League and The Girl's Club. Dr. Riley was an avid tennis player. He was a Lifetime member of the Kentucky Dental Association, American Dental Association and the Green River Dental Society. Dr. Riley was a member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ where he also served as a Deacon. He had a great life and deep love for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved people and had no hard feelings for anyone.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Carol Lee Axton Riley; a daughter, Rebecca Riley Glenn and her husband, Mike and a son, John Woodford Riley (Lori); four grandchildren, Meaghan Lee Glenn, John Woodford Riley Jr., Riley Elizabeth Glenn and Jenna Axton Glenn; one great-grandson, Carter Malone Riley; a brother-in-law, Woody Axton (Sue); a niece; two nephews and Paula Wink, a longtime family friend and caregiver.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2018 at James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory. Services and burial are private. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to First Christian Church, 700 J.R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, KY 42303.
