Mary Doris Cox Bennett, 86, Of Owensboro passed away Friday, December 21, 2018 in the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Born in Owensboro, a daughter of the late George and Irene Hudson Cox, she was a graduate of Owensboro Technical High School and attended Murray State College. She worked in her father's grocery as a child before working for Westinghouse and General Electric. Doris spent most of her years in the savings and loan business and retired from First Kentucky Savings and Loan in Livermore. Following her marriage to a Methodist minister, she had been a member of Masonville Methodist Church, Sacramento Methodist Church, Kuttawa Methodist Church, Hartford United Methodist Church, St. Luke United Methodist Church, Bennett Memorial United Methodist Church, Leitchfield United Methodist Church and was presently a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Doris was a hard worker with a servant's heart and she had been active in the Women's Society of Christian Service and United Methodist Women.
Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by a great-grandchild Claire Embry; her sisters Georgia Dantic, Evelyn Duncan, Clara Alexander, and Shirley Jean Cox; and her brothers Cletus Cox, William M. Cox, Paul Cox, Robert Cox, and Charles Cox.
Left to honor her memory are her husband Rev. Charles Bennett; her children Leah Vandiver and her husband Larry, Susan Fulkerson and her husband James, and Sherrianne Leach and her husband Eddie; her grandchildren Katie Vandiver Gunterman and her husband Kevin, Lindsey Vandiver and her husband Josh Sickles, Chelsea Vandiver, Joshua Fulkerson and his wife Haley, Jillian Fulkerson Embry and her husband Brandon, Zachary Fulkerson and his wife Laura, Mallory Leach Howell and her husband Christopher, Jordan Leach and his wife Suzanne, Shelby Leach Taylor and her husband Dustin, and Reagan Leach and his wife Nicole; and her great-grandchildren, Keegan Gunterman, Everett Sickles, Elijah Fulkerson, Isaac Fulkerson, Silas Embry, Oliver Fulkerson, Adeline Fulkerson, Nora Taylor, and Knox Howell, with two on the way. The family wishes to express their grateful appreciation of Mrs. Bennett's devoted caregivers and Hospice of Western Kentucky.
The funeral service for Mrs. Bennett will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where visitation will be from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday and after 9:00 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Claire Foundation, 3824 Horsemint Trail, Lexington, KY 40509.
